I'm sure many of you did it already but we kept it because we love TV and want many options. In the last a few years, we paid $155 for ATT Uverse with 1000 Mbps + 4 TVs. A month ago when I renew the price went to $185 including all the taxes. Threatening to leave didn't help this time. It was time to move on.
What we must have 1) Live news + sport 2) The rest we just record and the ability to record many shows. 3) One remote that controls everything=TV, the box, receiver. This remote should turn on/off all the equipment + control the sound. 4) The ability to start seeing a recorded show on one TV and continue on another. 5) Streaming Netflix, Prime, others.
This is what we got. 1) Spectrum offered me $39.99 for a 500 Mbps modem for 2 years. 2) I selected YouTubeTV. We got all the channels we wanted. 3) I selected Amazon FIRE TV 4K max at $35 each.
Wait, we got a much better service.
YouTubeTV: it took us several days to figure everything out, and get used to it. You can't key the channel number to get it directly, and you can't use last channel to flip between 2 channels. That was solved by 2 options, the last several channels are at the top, it takes more than one click. The best option come from Fire TV(see below). The most annoying was to establish favorite channels but still see all the channels. You have 5 options (sort A-Z or Z-A, last used, default, and custom). Last used sounds reasonable but still not good enough. Custom is what you want, after you select your channels, you will only see these. That's not OK, I still wanted to see all of them. The solution: I selected all of them and put my favorites at the top. There is no wonder, YouTubeTV is good, Google owns it.
Amazon FIRE TV 4K max: I came to conclusion that it's Roku or Fire TV. Roku has more options for streaming, but I don't care about all the options, just the main ones we love. I also read Roku may have a problem controlling my receiver. I was only interested in the best streaming speed. Fire TV 4K max was $35 while Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ Streaming Device 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision with Roku Voice Remote Pro was $65. It was an easy choice. I bought the first Fire TV and the installation was a breeze, i plugged it into the TV HDMI and it recognized everything. I now can turn on/off all the equipment + control the sound. I bought 3 more and installed them. FIRE TV 4K max also works with your voice commands. You can say things like this: go to Netflix, YouTubeTV. When you are in Netflix you can say search for a movie name. In YouTubeTV you can say "go to CNBC", then switch to "go to FS1" to see the worldcup.
But wait, I got better stuff I didn't have before: Our 4 TVs are 3-8 years old. The big 75" is the latest, the other 2 had much slower streaming. The fourth TV is a plasma. My big TV had just 30 Mbps for streaming, even if I wired it to the mesh network. It was good for Netflix, sometimes gave up buffering with Prime, and was not good with HBO and Hulu. The other 2 TV were only good with Netflix, the fourth had none. The FIRE TV speed is at 140-160 Mbps for all TVs, anywhere in the house, all the way to the finished basement. No more hanging and buffering. The FIRE TV 4K max turns on/off everything very quickly every time. Uverse remote would do it one by one, if you moved, it may shut down only 2 out of the 3. Never had this problem with Fire TV. I now have very fast smart 4 TVs
So, how much I pay now? 1) $40 for Spectrum 500 Mbps modem, no FCC and other crap BS fees. 2) I share YoutubeTV with my SIL for just $35 per month, after we tried it for several weeks without any problem. So, instead of paying $185, we pay just $75. Saving $110 per month = 12 hotel nights.
Hulu came up with just $1.99 per month for a year so I paid for it too, after I found at least 6 series we can watch.
Other problems. The most problematic was the mesh. After one hour of no success, I called TP link. It took the rep about an hour to work with me. I just bought a TV sound bar and couldn't install it. I called Amazon tech rep in one minute. The guy took over the Fire TV and set it up in 2 minutes. Do you know any other detailer that would do it for you for free at that speed?

I’m not familiar with YouTube TV. But we have several streaming services that we share with family and friends. We get more options that way. We also have antenna service for the odd chance there is something to see. I have cut the cord to “news”. I do not have Fox, CNN or MSNBC that inadvertently can get into my house. Much nicer.
I also dumped Spectrum internet. Now have T-mobile Home Internet. Works great for t’stat, door bell, smart plugs, printer, lap tops, phones and Alexa. Cabled internet is dying. Verizon is starting the same type of 5G home internet.
I hated Xfinity and Spectrum. Very rude and conceited to deal with.

Nice going FD1000. We also cut the cord so to speak. Are you saying YouTube is $70 / month & a split cost you $35 ? We use Direct streaming around $110. Also our Spectrum runs around $75 / month.
One thing you didn't comment on , was the ability to take the Firetvstick with you as one vacations or winters else where.
Biggest reason we switched, I got Dam sick & tired of dealing with the cable company every time I turned around !!! Also weather interruptions & cleaning the dish of snow !

We share logins and passwords. Each service lets you set up “profiles” so each can have their own content saved. Netflix requires you to pay for 1,2 or 3 users. Have not found that to be the case for Prime, Hulu, Disney+. I’m not sure about PBS and Paramount+.
Along with all the “free” stuff from Roku, we can’t watch it all.

I haven't had cable tv since 2004. Very happy without it. Have Netflix, Amazon Prime. I used to record over the air tv but don't bother doing that any longer. I watch far less sports than I used to. If there's something I really want to watch I'll watch with a buddy or go to a bar.

We subscribed to YouTube TV a few years ago because we can watch it here as well as in Chicago. We can suspend the service and start again on a monthly basis. While we go to Chicago, we do not need any TV subscription. In 2022, we cancelled YouTube TV also ($80/month). We use free YouTube service to listen programs in our mother tongue. Free news (24/7) comes on Samsung TV plus App. All networks are streaming free news service. My wife's favorite seems to be “FOX NEWS LIVE.” This is really live. There are also free entertainment Apps, such Tubio, etc. We do not watch any of them. We cannot spend more than an hour or two watching TV. I bought additional ones during the pandemic when my son and his family were here. There are 4 QLED TVs sitting in our home. In fact, when he buys his new home in the suburb, he can take many of them. It may not be worth because most new ones are very cheap and better. I paid $2000 for a UHD back in 2017. The same TV now costs $278 in Walmart.
When we go back to Chicago, I am planning to cut even the Spectrum internet service. We have unlimited phone, text, and data from T-Mobile and Verizon. We can use it for a day and return the modem the previous day. Why pay $80/month for not using it?
Finally, I want you to know that there are many free streaming services. You just google and find out.

Biggest reason we switched, I got Dam sick & tired of dealing with the cable company every time I turned around !!! Also weather interruptions & cleaning the dish of snow ! Ho Ho Ho , fritzo489 If you have a fast internet connection, all you need is something to connect to it. In my case it's a mesh with 3 connection around the house to keep the speed high at all places. I have ( this). Before that I just used an extender, the streaming was iffy. The mesh improved it but still not great except Netflix. YouTubeTv is $65, maybe $70 with taxes, not sure. So now I pay for 500 Mbps $40 for 2 years and $35 for YouTubeTV. I can take the Fire TV + the remote around the world, all I need is internet connection. I haven't tried that. In many places, my T-Mobile speed connection to the tower is faster than the hotel. I don't get sick with the cable companies. I have spectrum/Charter over 20 years, they were reliable and fixed things the next day. The, ATT, offered me a better deal and cheaper. It worked pretty well most times. ATT service is known as one of the worst in everything. I have 2 problems over 5 years. One TV box broke down, it took 2 weeks to replace and make it work = terrible. It happened one more time, I got the new one the next day, and it worked right away. All the other options many discuss are not straight forward. Several channels in one app, other in another app. YouTubeTV have 100+ channels(locals+national) + unlimited recording, all in an easy way to watch, stop, continue in another TV. The TV + Fire stick + others(receiver+souround sound) all are controlled by the Fire TV. This remote is so much better than my SIL Apple. See comparison( link). YouTube Tv is very similar to the old cable, you just stream instead of using cable and why you need great speed. There is no compromise. Basically, we like top-notch quick services and pay as little as we can. Just like everything else I use. I looked at other internet options and they are much slower at 50-100 Mbps. I think we need at least 300 to get excellent speed. So, from now on, all I need is a 12-24 months contract for a fast internet. I have all the rest. I have 24 months at $39.99. In 2 years, I predict I will find another 500 Mbps at $40-50. 400-500 Mbps would be a slow option but all you need. I can't stand not having all the above. This is an experience. Watching 75" TV with good sound is great. Over the years I started from 42", 50", 60" and 75" when the price went under $1000. Our den is pretty big. MY SIL gave us free tickets to see the local NBA team. I hated it. The noise, the stupid spectator games every 5 minutes, commercials all the time, constant people who move thru in/out were unbearable. I like to watch sports, not stupid stuff. My son tells me that soccer is the only way, as I used to watch. You want to kill a sport, let American TV and ads control it. I can watch from home and see everything much closer with repeats and great commentary. I don't watch sport like I used too. Just the finals of the NBA,NFL, tennis, World cup. When I say sport, I mean, real athletes. Baseball and golf are just games, not easy to master, but you don't have to be an athlete. I don't watch soccer because it's boring, only the world cup. The regular Youtube has the daily highlight of each game in just 5 minutes. If they made it 15 minutes, I would stop watching most games, except the semi-finals + finals. If I know 2 great teams I watch too.

FD1000, Have you tried college volleyball ? NCAA girls tourney in progress now . Action packed with limited ads. Spectrum, We wanted to put internet on hold for a month, nope 2 month minimum . Bro goes off line for a month , so he can get the better rate. New customer I guess. That tells me NO 2 year deals here. "1) Spectrum offered me $39.99 for a 500 Mbps modem for 2 years." says you. Yet on TV they say no contracts. You've got me thinking now. Have gal pal ditch Spectrum & I'll pick them up. I'll check with Bro & see why he doesn't do this. Have a good one, fritzo489

We stopped Spectrum TV long ago and used Dish Network, and I forgot the year. But, since we were mostly staying in Chicago, we cancelled and started with YouTube TV. YouTube TV has more sports channels, along with normal kids stuff for our granddaughters. We used it during the pandemic time when our son brought his family to Cookeville. I am paying $80/month for internet only. No TV because Samsung provides free Samsung TV+. It is good enough for us on a temporary basis. You can get the other stuff on YouTube free on the computer or on Samsung TV, because Samsung has lots of Apps. You can install, Disney plus, Netflix, etc. We used them when my son was here with his daughters. We cancelled them here, but he is subscribing for them in his home.
Cutting the cord and streaming are the future. I can stream a lot of stuff in my computer. So, I bought a new cheap Acer Laptop and connect it to the TV. We can get plenty of entertainment free using streaming Apps.

The comparison of the costs of the same service between rural and urban areas is not fair because of the different costs involved, based on the population size and density. We (I mean rural) pay more here than, say, for example, in Atlanta (FD's place). Besides, service is very important for the people in the rural area. I would (and still do) buy the TVs from a store from my area than from Amazon or Walmart. The local guy will not only deliver, but also install everything and explain how to use the TV. That is how I found how the streaming is done and how to save money without Cable TV. I recall a conversation I had with the Spectrum Rep. When I called (remember those old days that you had to call somebody) Spectrum to turn back my internet service, he asked me why I had not subscribed to TV. I told him that I get everything on YouTube. He not only agreed with me and also asked not to tell this to my wife.
There is another significant factor here. Trust is very high in the rural area. Even though, “Bob” of “Bob's Auto shop” is dead, his son knows us. So, we will get the same service. He will call the insurance company and start doing the necessary things. My insurance agent was my own neighbor. After he retired, I moved to Farm Bureau. The agent is my son's high school classmate. So, the kid knows us. We needed to change the light bulb in the high ceiling. A kid came with a long ladder and replaced it two days ago. My wife paid $10. So, there is a social compact that runs through generations here.
So, you cannot simply compare with rural and urban prices.

ECE Prof -- Agreed. I only compare my old bill to the new bill. :-) My friend moved deep in the middle of southern Texas hills. He gets service via Hughes. The latest thing, if I understand correctly, is getting full-blown internet off 5G. But we use landlines and the cell phone for 5 minutes or less a month. With the prices of landlines so high, I will switch to voice-over IP or go to strictly cell, which most people did years ago. Saw two large companies are racing to provide phone service globally via satellites.

fritzo489, there is no contract, just $39.99 for 24 months. It's not on the Internet. I got a postcard offer in the mail. My SIL was grandfathered for the $65 ATT for 1000 speed about 3 years ago when he canceled the TV. Then, he added YoutubeTV, at that time it was much cheaper.
There are now several competitors, and I forecast we would be able to get 300-500 speed in a few years for $40-50. This is why I don't live in a rural area.
Yesterday, I looked at other apps on Fire TV. I found pluto. Sure, I can see news from different places, the picture quality isn't good, they miss others. I actually record one hour of news that we like and skip the ads. It's all about convenience. Some like to work harder to get stuff, I prefer to pay cheaper prices and get great service.

Correct. The millions I made paved the way for great service, but I still want a cheap price. That's the difference between a frugal to a miser person. So now, instead of 8 weeks vacation, I'm adding 2 more weeks. I tried to convince ATT I will pay $150. You may not make much, or make nothing. It's difficult to acquire a new customer. ATT lost.

I do care what things cost. I will pay a fair price. I don't want to spend an extra $10,000 for a yacht or helicopter pad, just because I have the extra cash. And the money I saved on my second vacation home allowed me to get a third in Vermont.

It's all about convenience. Some like to work harder to get stuff, I prefer to pay cheaper prices and get great service. In that case, try Walmart "plus" and add "In Home". "It's all about the ultimate convenience." Unless you prefer to "work harder to get stuff" and you get "cheaper prices and get great service". Pays for itself quickly. Prime is like a great vanilla cake; Walmart plus with in home is like adding creme frosting on top.

My new home is near shopping but I prefer online buying and delivery.

Never owned a boat, RV, another home and never will, in the future. If we need to use one, we just do it and pay for it. We just own our home and the rest in the market. KISS.
Buying weekly groceries+more was never a problem, I have to see/touch it. Each Friday I start with Aldi, then go to Walmart (which includes all the other stuff that Aldi and other supermarket don't have). I do both in just 1 and 1/4 hours.

We changed to streaming THIS WEEK. We still have ATT DirectTV recording until 12/31/2022, then it stops. My history is recording shows from Tevo, Comcast, then DirectTV since 2004. One week in, I have mastered streaming, and am amazed by it. 1000 times more, well-organized options, to watch for about 1/5th of the cost. For about $30 per month (ad-free Paramount+, Peacock+, and the amazing Discovery +) for cable TV. If you ever feel you will switch to streaming (because it is much more convenient, offers far more content, and cost a fraction) but want to play with it first, subscribe to Paramount plus, an ad-free - annual subscription. Half off until 1/02/20222, so for $50 for a year. The free movies will pay for that, not to mention the tons of ad-free TV shows. But if you have Prime Video or Netflix you already have been streaming. Paramount+, Peacock+, Hulu (not TV), and Discovery + just provide the networks (and so much more) so I can stop DirectTV for $142 per month. I could have done YouTube TV, etc, but tried Direct TV streaming (same thing), but I am done with recording since I can get anything via streaming whenever I want it.

It is amazing, people can easily pick up and save a ton of money too. My story is long, and it is not worth repeating.
Now, I am trying to figure out the dual audio setup in my computer so that my wife and I can have different audio outputs. I need Bluetooth output due to my hearing problem, and my wife is on the opposite side, too much sound for her. As I aged, my hearing has become worse and worse. We are something like 30-40 dB apart. I tried yesterday using Google search, but the audio settings were not exactly what was described in help. I am yet to figure out because it was still one or the other. I will find it someday.
If anybody can find the technique, please give me a link. TIA.

I could have done YouTube TV, etc, but tried Direct TV streaming (same thing), but I am done with recording since I can get anything via streaming whenever I want it. Several questions: 1) Can you get live sport such several ESPN, Worldcup, NBA, NFL, grand slam tennis? 2) How many apps do you use for legacy TV(ATT). I use only YoutubeTV, and all my recordings are only on that. 3) What does it mean? "I am done with recording since I can get anything via streaming whenever I want it." how many apps for that? Can you get a recording from a month ago pretty easy? For me, everything is on one app, YoutubeTV. It saves 9 months of recordings. Spectrum also have an app such as Youtubetv, offering several channels lists and it's cheaper because you can use your Roku to get it, not their boxes. I'm waiting for the day I can select only the channels I like and pay $2 per each. Let all the losers die. Spectrum had this offer but not on the net. They told me it costs $20 less than than their cheapest channels option and I can select 20 channels.

I usually do not watch all the games of any series/tournament, only semi finals and finals. So I just signup for a month on internet for ESPN+ or whatever channel is streaming it and then watch it on my TV using their app.
