I filed for SS to start Jan. 2024.
I received a letter from the SSA that my first payment for Jan will arrive Feb 21.
No mention was made about it being a double payment to include Feb. So, I assume SS will be crediting my account every month on the 3rd Wed of the following month, unless a double payment is made.
Has anyone received a double first payment?
If not, it seems that SS lifetime payments will always be a month short, because IIRC when my parents died, they never received a check afterwards.
On another note, since I am 67, I have been paying medicare premiums directly. January has already been debited to my bank account.
SS will deduct the January payment from their first check. So medicare will receive 2 payments for January.
Has anyone encountered this, and if so was it reconciled later?
Hopefully it will self resolve and I will not have to take this up with the SSA as they are not very accessible, and also quite slow.
Thanks!

The actual payment is 1 month after you start. Think of it as earning a paycheck; you have to "work" the hours to get the pay.

It is strange though that the wording on the application process is that payments would start "in" January. The SS website states that applications will be responded to in 4-6 weeks (IIRC) so after about 10 weeks I followed up and talked to a rep to get a progress update. He said that I would be receiving a double payment in Feb. However the letter I just received didn't verify that and seems to the contrary. From what I have read from other sources it isn't uncommon for the SS reps to be wrong sometimes.

Easy solution, just wait for SS on Feb and see if you get 1 or 2 payments.

No double payment on the first one for either me or my wife. It was just the same as the rest that followed.

I'm more concerned about making 2 medicare payments. Given the number of beneficiaries that start SS after medicare, I'm guessing they will reconcile somehow.

Social Security is paid in arrears. Your March payment is for February.

Yes, archer , you "start" earning in January. As if the 45 years leading up to the "start" was not enough. This is Uncle we are dealing with.

Uncle needs to squeeze the past drop of blood out of me! I guess it makes sense for the SSA to pay in arrears since from the beginning it has operated on a pay it forward basis. They have to collect from our generation's progeny in order to pay us. Get to work kids!

This happened when I commenced SS, but it was 8 years ago. As I recall Social Security has an automatic process to make you whole, but it took as long as a year.

I applied to start SS in February. I just made a direct payment to medicare to cover Feb/Mar/Apr. I am still waiting for my determination letter. Will be interested to see how your payments/premiums work out. On a side note, I have been making my direct premium payments on the medicare site using my credit card in order to collect a few points. Once SS starts, I think it's mandatory that the premiums are deducted from SS, unfortunately. Also, if you want taxes deducted from SS, you have to write a letter requesting same.

archer, archer, I just received my first SS payment which included a Medicare deduction. I also received a U.S. treasury check with no explanation that turns out to be a refund for Medicare prepayments. My scenario - I started SS in February. Received the first payment in March. Prepaid 3 months of Medicare in January to cover Feb/Mar/Apr. The check with no explanation appears to be for two months of premiums. So I am assuming that while SS payments are for the previous month, the Medicare deduction is for the month the check is issued. i.e. my refund check would be for Mar/Apr.

It makes sense. For those not getting Social Security, Medicare billing is quarterly, unless IRMAA is involved & then the billing is monthly. Once Social Security starts, Medicare is just deducted from from the monthly payments. No other option is offered. Any excess Medicare prepayments are refunded. www.medicare.gov/basics/costs/pay-premiums

Yes, SS pays for the previous month, while medicare is paid in advance. I received my first SS check in Feb, to cover Jan. I have been paying medicare directly for the past few years and my last automatic payment was in Jan. Interesting that you received a compensation for medicare. I have not received a refund yet for Jan.
