Received my first chill as as oldie when I received a check from my auto insurance company to pay a collision shop for a run in with a buck. Ten Thousand Six Hundred Ninety Six……… This brought back thoughts of monthly LTC checks for my mother. My paranoia about this is deep seeded,😂

Inflation and longevity have instilled a similar paranoia in me. Perhaps we should start a counseling group. Not lol.

uncleharley , I got my everyday income needs finished first and fast using the least amount of assets as I could. That’s why I mentioned pouring everything into VTI now. It’s for my wife just in case. I need counseling for too much though. 🤫

I recently received the bill for my triple bypass surgery. $240,000; Medicare paid it for me; I can't imagine how the uninsured can sleep at night.

$240K billed may be only $24K paid by insurance.
Real tragedy for the uninsured is that they don't get those group deals/discounts unless they beg.

Having had six heart ablations at $250k each and a couple of other extreme situations, I'm all too familiar with this craziness. I don't know what the situation would have been like without good health insurance!

Unfortunately, when providers know there is a enormous pot of money available, there is a rush to raise prices to get as much of that pot as possible. I don't think insurance has really saved anyone any money. Prices were once aligned with what the average person could afford to pay. That relationship is dead.

As an MD, I can tell you the insurance “system” has taken a HUGE cut out of all the medical billing across the entire health care system! It is amazing how much the upper level “managers”, CEO’s, etc. make at the various insurance companies. Here in SC, BC/ BS of SC paid the most recent CEO well over 2.2 million PER YEAR, and several other senior execs make over 1 million per year, as “base pay”. Where do you think that money is coming from?
Ive watched the insurance companies slowly “worming” their way into the health care system for years, and it’s a definite “tax” on all the transactions. As was previously noted, that bill for a triple bypass will be cut dramatically when it is reimbursed, and the insurer will pay maybe a tenth of it. They also take a “fee” along the way, just like a credit card company, but I can assure you it is WAY higher than the 1-3% of a credit card company!
