I have been trashing ATT for over 10 years. Messy business, lousy customer business, a band aid of mishmash companies. Wait, it has a high income, but still a terrible investment. Many still hold it...why? See below total return for 1-5-15 years.

I am hoping you are asking this as a rhetorical question....
Many Investors, especially retirees are infatuated with distributions. To some, it does not matter if the total return is sub par, or even negative. It is similar to moths being attracted to a fire.

Yep, it wasn't a question but a statement, you already know my argument against distributions. ATT performance is so bad, it provides the proof why not, and it is held by many.

I believe the debt of AT&T is now larger than the market cap. Which is a bad thing in all respects.

His focus hasn't changed after all this time. I give him full marks for consistency.

This is off topic, but we have ATT for our landline service and I hate it. I would cancel it in a heart-beat, except that my bride of 66 years doesn't want to give up her land line. The price goes up each year and the caller ID hasn't worked for 2 years. I have reported it numerous times to no avail.

We have the so-called AT&T "Uverse" landline now as part of our Internet bundle. The service guy was honest about this - he said that the company is trying to move people from older regulated analog "conventional landlines" to more modern digital/VOIP "Uverse landlines" (unregulated). If the power goes out, the newer Uverse landline also goes out (along with the Internet), unlike the old analog landlines that got low-voltage power directly from the phone company (so, there could be city/town-wide blackout, but the old landlines would work).
Many have dropped landlines completely as the cell phone are more widespread and reliable now. We are keeping the landline for a while longer knowing that it is really the VOIP that we have.

Some of cell companies started giving access to Satellite communications in case of emergency, would this not work in case we have a black out and have a mean to charge the cell phone battery through solar?

IBM, another high income stock, better than ATT, but still a dinosaur. I have been discussing with a Bridge buddy, stocks every several months. This guy use mostly stocks. Since 2010 he didn't make many changes and own about 50/50 higher income stocks/other. I keep making fun of him about his ATT+IBM holdings.
When I asked him: in 2010, when you bought these, which company was better in your opinion? He said: No doubt, MSFT was a much better choice. When I asked him why ATT+IBM, his answer was predictable...because of higher dividend. Me: did you check the performance of all 3? He: I don't care, I wanted to own both regardless.
Me: let me show you the difference. Since 01-01-2010; MSFT made 1345%...ATT 56%...IBM 69%. Me: Do you think you made a mistake? He: mmm, zzz, maybe Me: Are you going to change? He: let me think about it. Just amazing.
This is what high income does to investors. This is why buy and hold can also be a big enemy for many.
