In response to marquay's request, let me begin with a brief quote from my book:
"MEMO from The Stock Trader's Notebook: If you truly are a raw rookie, a toddling tyro in the high weeds, a green-to-the-gills beginner when it comes to investing, wealth management, planning, savings for retirement, this is the SECOND book you should be reading. If you're a little fuzzy about 401k, term life insurance, mortgage deductions, IRAs, I-Bonds, mutual funds and compound interest, drop everything and go fetch yourself an updated copy of “The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need” by Andrew Tobias. He and Suze Orman (“The 9 Steps To Financial Freedom” and “The Road To Wealth”) have already covered saving for retirement, budgeting and long term goals, and they've done it very well."

chang: Yes, I followed your prompt and found the "Investing 101" forum, but I think it's highly unlikely any new investors will stumble upon it unless the thread is listed among the main body of other threads and be regularly "bumped" up to the top of the current topics of discussion.
(Correct me if I'm wrong.)

(Correct me if I'm wrong.) richardsok : the board is not hidden, it shows up in plain view under the "General" category. See below (click to enlarge): Edit: I moved it up a little higher to give it more visibility:

I also added an "Announcement" which will show up at the top of the page. I'll keep it up for a few days, then delete it.

uncleharley , I had 3 mentors, growth, dividends and money management people. I took some night classes and joined Better Investing and later was a volunteer there which is now online. I think I had a good foundation and desire to learn more then. This will either save some youngins time or make investing even more confusing to them. It may attract the 80% who are lurkers or intimidated.

I finally took some classes at a community college that helped me get a real start to doing something with an interest.

The first investment book I read was Random walk and why I owned only index funds from the start in 1995 for about 5 years.
Then came the bad market in 2000. I based my system on 3 Buffet’s rules: Rule No. 1: Never Lose Money. Rule No. 2: Never Forget Rule No. 1 and Rule 3: Diversification is a protection against ignorance. I added a fourth rule: momentum. My system was born in early 2000.
Basically: my generic system looks for the best 5 funds with risk-adjusted performance, keeps changing them using momentum, and each fund must perform well. The idea is to be mostly in the right category + achieve better risk-adjusted performance by looking at performance first and then selecting the best SD, Sharpe funds.
