Why are people pushing for this??!!! www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2022/12/06/5g-planes-phone-calls-europe/Years ago, before take-off, I was trying to read and the guy across the aisle from me was yakking on his cell. I started responding to him like I was at the other end of the phone. It disturbed him so he was unable to carry on the conversation, kind of like how I couldn't read my book. He hung up, telling his friend he was sitting next to a "dinosaur". I was pleased with the compliment.

Kind of an interesting observation and probably nothing: Only have seen this in Europe. One person will be talking to 2 or 3 others and they will talk non stop for a considerable amount of time, like 1/2 hour, while the others say nothing. Very odd.

It's always interested me how we object to others talking on their phones more than if they were talking to someone present. I guess it is just weird to witness a one sided conversation. I'm not criticizing the OP, and I often find it bothersome myself. It's just kind of odd when I think about it though.

I think it is a lack of respect for people around them. They are in their own little world. It seems that people that talk on phones in front of people usually talk louder than the people right next to them. It is annoying and shows no thoughtfulness towards others. There are some that will answer a phone at a bar and carry on a loud conversation without regard to the other bar patrons. I always excuse myself and go somewhere else to finish the call, or I tell them I will call them back. There are even some that talk on the phone in a store and you can hear them halfway across the store as if they were on a megaphone. Alright, enough for me, please excuse me I have a phone call.

Annoyed by a big talker or screaming babies on your flight? We've all been there, bros. But few of life's problems are so easily solved. It's not too late to put YOURSELF on your Christmas shopping list and get yourself a good pair of Bose noise-canceling headphones (for strong aversion to nearby noise) or noise-canceling earphones to deter average-level yakkity-yak pollution nearby. I'm never without them on airplanes now. I borrow little "Takeaway" recorded books from my library; not much larger than a pack of matches and also have a couple hundred pieces of my favorite music recorded on my android phone -- so I can still be in airplane mode and don't need my Verizon connection 30,000 feet high. Ironically, though I have a good stereo speaker system in my home library, the only time I can really get down into good music is on an airplane or in the car. Noise prob solved, that leaves my other two horrors of air travel --(1) torture-sized seats (2) the brat in the row behind you kicking at the back of your seat.... all flight long. So, crank up your 'phones and lock the flight's a-holes away for a spell. Who can compete with Simon at his best.....? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5Eoax6I-O4

I always go elsewhere to talk on my phone, not so much out of consideration but more that I tend to be a private and rather introverted person. I don't need other people, even friends and family listening to my calls. I'm fine socializing in groups, but the other end of my phone isn't part of any group.
People talking loud on their phones is common, and for me, comes from having trouble hearing the person on the other end. If their voice is hard to hear over ambient noise on my end, I naturally speak louder as if they cant hear me either. Another reason to take my calls to a quieter secluded area.
I was in a plane once that was delaying take off and the guy in the seat in front of me was on his phone. He wasn't talking loud but the acoustics of the cabin were such that the sound of his voice seemed to be coming from the planes overhead speaker above my seat. I found it irritating that the pilot was sitting in the cockpit chatting on the phone. I complained to the flight attendant who gave me this look like he was concerned for my mental health. LOL! Finally I saw that it was the guy in front of me and not a pilot who left the speaker on. Pretty embarrassing!

richardsok's right. Headphones will be flying off the shelves. Investment opportunity? And, gave me a Christmas present idea. Thanks.
The good news, per the article, is that the FAA is against.
