I have subscribed to this antivirus service when it came free with my new computer and renewed the subscription when the renewal was cheap. I am not using all of their available services, namely, Personal Data Clean Up and McAfee Web Adviser (secure Web search).
What McAfee Total Protection services do you use and what is your experience?
Thanks.

I stopped paying for virus(and all the rest) protection at least 10-15 years ago. I used to be a time when I purchased a McAfee floppy diskette. I used to buy the previous year and pay only $5 instead of $30. That deal was gone. I started using FREE AVG and never looked back. Actually, since I bought my last laptop in 2018, I only use Windows Defender because AVG gave me problems and I also I read it's pretty good. So far, since we started using PCs, for 20-25 years, we got infected only one time. It was gone in 2 minutes with the help of free CCleaner. Is Microsoft Defender enough? ( link) "If you’re running Windows 10 or Windows 11, Windows Defender provides as effective protection against malware as almost any of its free or paid-for rivals. You don’t need to install it or activate it, and its default configuration provides decent protection for most of the usual threats facing general consumers. It’s already there, working, as soon as your activate your OS. Remember to keep up with your Windows Security Updates and you’re golden."

Is Microsoft Defender enough? On a PC I only do Defender but rely upon occasional disk imaging as a true backup (Macrium Reflect is a nice product and free).

Thanks, guys. We got McAfee subscription for 10 devices until end of 2024 for $49.99. Cost wise, keeping or not is not of much consequence. FD1000 , do you use / install any extensions, Ad blockware, etc on browsers? Thanks.

Dedicated laptop for money ONLY. No email, no browsing, no Google. Nothing else. Three website links saved. Couple of banks and a broker.
Always use a challenge device for login.
McAfee was terrible 20 years ago, when I stopped using it. Built-in Windows security for all machines; money and others.

I don't see ads and I don't use any extensions (except for language).

I'm not a fan of McAfee or Norton. Highly recommend SentinelOne. The AI and malware recognition is outstanding and it's easy to deploy. Could write a whole page on why it's far superior. Do a few google searches using "SentinelOne vs XYZ" and you'll see the same. FD1000 mentioned the best browser IMO and one I've been using since they first launched BRAVE. It's superb. With Brave, you don't need any extensions unless you'd like to use Honey to save money on purchases with promo codes. Adblock and privacy built in. Built on Chrome but PRIVATE and much better than DuckDuck.

I uses AVG free and a couple of cleaning programs CCleaner and Spybot Search and Destroy. They were recommended by my company's IT professional.
One thing I learned about Chrome is that it automatically turns itself on if the computer is restarted. I have to use CCleaner to force it closed to clean its trash. After that it stays closed until a software update restarts the computer.
Since I got a ransom ware notice (this one was easy to clear) and AVG stopped a virus from this site I clean the computer frequently of pretty much everything. It is amazing how much trash is gathered from programs you don't even know are operating in the background. I use Firefox but Internet Explorer, AVG secure browser, Chrome (when running) collect tons of stuff in the background. After one visit on the internet CCleaner found 430 Megabytes of trash that needed to be deleted.

Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) desktop support officially ended on June 15, 2022 so IE 11 should no longer be used. If this hasn't been done already, you can modify Chrome settings to clear browsing data and change site settings which control what info sites can use/show. When done correctly, this should help reduce junk on your computer while increasing security. Previously I used Norton/Symantec or Kaspersky antivirus apps. Since Microsoft Defender Antivirus has improved over time, I've been using it for the past few years. I haven't experienced any issues with Defender and it's included for free in Windows 10/11. I also use the free versions of CCleaner and MalwareBytes to maintain my PC. Intel SSD Toolbox (exclusively for Intel drives) is utilized to keep my solid-state drive healthy.

AVG Free spies on what the user is doing. They make money by selling that data.
Use Kaspersky (pay for it - probably the best AV out there) or use Microsoft Defender (built in AV); MalwareBytes Premium is also worth it in my opinion.

I bought AVG Total. I do not use any of their services, like VPN, cleaning, etc due to some problems that I do not like. Furthermore, I paid only $25/two-year for three devices, one Android and two laptops. It is better to pay rather than be sorry.

Someone mentioned that they use the Brave Browser. The reason I don't like chrome based browsers for regular use, they slow the computer, they use up too much of the CPU, Memory and it makes my computer run really hot, even if they are simply in the background with 4 tabs open. That's why I much prefer Firefox. Another browser I have used from time to time is - www.waterfox.net/It's original aim was to be a very fast, optimised version of Firefox. It still is along with great privacy tweaks.

Despite being built on Chromium, it doesn't hog computer resources, and it loads websites blazingly fast. It's certainly one of the best browser options out there, which is why it's so popular! If privacy is your main concern, there are even more privacy-focuses browsers available, even though Brave already does an impressive job. Attachments:

FD I need to use a master password to unlock the passwords stored in "Firefox's Password" lock. I have never any problem of leakage of my passwords as it happened with Chrome and Edge. Does Brave have "Password Lock" with a master password to unlock it, similar to Firefox?

Millions believed that the sun rotated around the earth. Millions believed that the earth was flat, many still do.
Just because millions do something, doesn't make them correct.

So, 2/3 of users are wrong, I got it. Do you realize that MSFT abandoned their development of Explorer and joined the Chromium family? Firefox continue to lose millions of users, too and why it's % of total users is negligible at around 3-4%. The world is running on Chrome, just a simple fact. When you can't prove your point, you get angry. I give you my permission to use FF. I have 5 browsers installed including FF, but I haven't opened FF for years because Brave works flawlessly. BTW, most businesses use Chrome too and many of them are run by pro IT, I guess these pros also believe the earth is flat.

Who said I was angry? In my experience, people who use chrome, tend to get infected with weird/malware type extensions. (Google's app store for chrome and android have been shown to be a lot worse malware/spyware wise over time; Apple and Firefox a lot less - as far as media stories I have heard)
I haven't seen that with Firefox yet.
Just by pointing out more stats of users doesn't really add anything.
The reason people like Chrome is because it feels more responsive + fast. That comes at a cost of higher memory, cpu usage - which causes the heating issue, I talked about and slowing all the other stuff on the computer. It also comes at a cost of worse security, privacy also.
As has been demonstrated over time, people don't value their privacy very highly, nor can they quantify the "security" issues, because tracing a loss of money, to a fake credit card transaction, caused by poor security in your browser is so hard.
I don't disagree that millions use Chrome. In fact a lot of people I know do, and when they complain about how slow their computer is, I point out that it's their usage of Chrome that's half the problem. Once they stop, the other parts of the computer usage improves.

I knew sooner or later you would mention Apple. This discussion is not about APPLE obsession vs Android/rest of the world. Brave + DuckDuckGo solve a lot of why I don't use Google Chrome. While years ago Apple + FF were superior, not so much anymore. Things get better all the time, but one thing hasn't changed, Apple products are extremely expensive, at 30% of the price I can get 80-90% of the capabilities and why it's worth it. Sometimes it's ridiculous, my tracker watch costs under $30, it less than 10% of Apple. I can easily buy Apple but, see ( link). Years ago, I have used FF when the others didn't work well. Since I bought my "new" laptop in 2018, I hardly ever used FF because Chromium (Google and now Brave) work very well.

I will never use Chrome and Edge. People have stolen my passwords and tried to login even into my Chase, TCRS accounts, etc. Fortunately, I did not lose anything. I am going to dismantle Brave now because I do not want to get into trouble, even though FF works fine for me. Brave seems to run faster, but it could be a problem. Why fix something that works.

It seems so. I did not have to do anything. Waterfox got everything, inlcuding my passwords from Password lock, and all the extenstions, and settings. When I booted, it asked for my primary password, and it worked. Identical. I will try it now, and see how it goes. I have to install it in my Android phone and sync the stuff there too. Thanks.
I added the App in my phone. My Firefox login does not work there. Something is weid. I will try again after uninstalling FF in the phone, and see if it works. FF clearly syncs with my Windows Computer with the same sign-in.

I didn't know waterfox had an android app. They don't seem to mention it on the website. Firefox does have both iOS and android apps.
Good Luck, I hope you enjoy the experience.
So question: why don't you use a Mac or iPhone? The security on that side is definitely way better. Just curious.

I installed it again. I even changed the password for my Firefox account and reentered it in Watfox Android phone APp. It keeps giving me error "check you credentials." I wanted to start with a different account. It keeps saying my phone number is wrong. That is a stupid error. My phone works everywhere, Vanguard, FIDO, Chase, ...There is something wrong with this App. I will read some more and try it tomorrow again.

delete that waterfox on Android right away.
It's not the same app as the one for your computer.
Totally different companies. I have no idea about the Android app.
Also recommend you change the firefox sync passwords again - just to be safe.
