What am I missing? Most of the world, based on mainstream media, seems to be lifting mask mandates and opening up social interactions.
Why this in China now? Do they not have good vaccines??

My sense is they have poor vaccines, are unwilling to lose face by importing the Pfizer or Moderna shots, there is very little natural immunity in the population, and they have a small number of hospital beds as a % of their population.
Plus, they are an autocratic nation where whatever Xi Jinping wants, Xi Jinping gets. What a joy that he is scheduled to be enshrined as dictator for life later this year.
And you can see a slow-motion car crash over Taiwan coming in the next few years a thousand miles away. All the more reason not to surrender to Putin in Ukraine, especially after the unnecessary and abject surrender in Afghanistan. Predators look for weakness and this is definitely precedent-setting territory.

Something does not compute. And this China situation could breed more variants and cause worldwide problems.

If I'm not mistaken, India has a lot of natural immunity from prior infection, whereas China, with its Draconian lockdowns, does not.

If you look at the Johns Hopkins website the total deaths in China is 12,000 (a lie) but over 1/2 (6600) are the last 28 days. That is a strange statistic. Another country with strange statistics is NZ. 231 total deaths, 175 in the last 28 days. Is this new strain potent?

Yeah.. globalization will most likely be reversed over some period of time. Not just China, but other non-democratic countries too.

What are you missing? -The Chinese did a study and figured out that millions would die! They decided that they wanted to prioritise their population. America decided economy was more important and that's why we Americans have 1 million dead and 1500-2000 Americans dying every day. This doesn't count those suffering from Long Covid.
Why the lockdown? - Omicron is much more transmissible and got past the defenses that they had in place. Hong Kong was not as strict and they had very free movement between Hong Kong and Guang Dong - we got spread!
Vaccines? - Vaccines work (at preventing serious illness). The uptake in vaccines hasn't been great, because 0 Covid made getting a vaccine fairly unnecessary, plus why get a vaccine when it's been such a short time from production to testing. Same vaccine hesitancy as in the USA.
In the USA / UK / Europe - cases are rising again, death are rising also, BA.2 is spreading rapidly, non-pharma mitigation have been suspended. Covid funding has dried up and no more seems to be coming - What do you expect will be the result in 4 - 12 weeks?

You or no one else, outside of China, knows how many Chinese have died. How did you come to the conclusion that a study was done and so quickly? The US started shutting down pretty fast. It was a political fight that stalled any preventative measures at the beginning. When there is something of this magnitude how is it the US prioritized the economy? There were zero tools, other than isolation, for nearly 1 year, to control the pandemic. If the economy was prioritized it didn't work very well. It has already been proven that comorbidities were counted less than Covid causing deaths.

You can go do a google search for the report, it's from a few months ago. The narrative "economy vs. zero covid" is a false narrative. The rich people are the older cohorts, they won't go out and spend money when they are worried. Young people don't have a lot of money. 0 Covid is the only way out.

I'm old. I never stopped spending but didn't go out. There was never any conceivable possible way to have zero Covid.
