Hi,
I have been using Morningstar Portfolio manager for 15 years, but never bothered to validate if their numbers. Here is what made me to think twice.
The total cost of a fund I invested is $4k and the total of the sold amount is coming to $18.5 based on the the transaction history of the fund (from the brokerage account that I also entered into Portfolio manager), but Portfolio manager is showing $14.5 as Realized gains.
Am I missing something? Do I need to report to the M* Customer Service?

It was never accurate, as far as at least 7-8 years. I just keep several category lists, but I and others noticed errors in the past. I have used it years ago for my portfolio and found after several months it was wrong and never looked back.
I now track my total portfolio thru Fidelity + Schwab. Both let you include all your accounts from different sources.

To answer the question posed in this thread's subject - NO! I track multiple watch lists via M* Portfolio Manager. Portfolio Manager stated incorrect values for "% Change" and "% Total Return" on a few occasions. It also reported stale mutual fund prices for several consecutive days at least twice. I wouldn't count on M* to remediate Portfolio Manager "bugs" but I guess it wouldn't hurt to contact customer service.

M* Portfolio does have errors at times.
But reporting of gains and losses (G/L) is based on assumptions that may/may not apply in all situations. M* Portfolio itself as 2 cost-basis settings and it is too complicated to account for which shares are sold first.

PM does not look at it that way so accurate number of shares can get off at times. Also distribution dates can be off. The reinvestment prices for ETFs and CEFs is never accurate since PM does not know what day they are bought by the broker.

Hi guys,
I have found, at times, price and total return updates to be slow with a good number investment positions tacked not updaing until after 7:00 pm EST. Because of these slow updates I have to revisit and update my Friday briefing report if posted before 10:00 pm. After 10:00 pm I usually find the updates complete ... but, not always.

Are you telling me that info sent out to brokerages is bogus !? Example Schwab Football Sunday, fritzo489 M* simplifies things. For example the monthly payout on PTY (most ETFs & CEFs) is posted in Portfolio Manager (PM) the day PIMCO declares it. Usually about the first few days of the month. They don't pay it until the 1st of the following month, then if it is reinvested the brokerage purchases additional shares on your behalf a day or two later. Portfolio Manager has no idea what the purchase price is. This is way too complicated for PM. Another example is PM uses the calculated amount to hundreth place or more. The brokerage/funds pays dollars and pennies. Too difficult for PM to understand. These examples always take editing to correct, then an error is produced and stays in the Dividend/Split screen forever.

Morningstar portfolio manager is accurate when it feels like being accurate. Going back a handful of years, they stopped caring, apparently. I do use it, because I'm accustomed to it. I know where to click to go and see the info I want to see. I often notice that the share prices are correct, though the indicator is incorrect about whether that share price went up or down or was flat on the day. I have never attempted to import anything into there. I do like it's X-Ray tool. I would never PAY for Morningstar premium: they're just too lackadaisical. But I get premium via TRP because I have X amount invested with them.

But I get premium via TRP because I have X amount invested with them. I use free Morningstar X-ray too as well as one of the versions of M* on TRP (I believe there are two). I do not get the analyst reports. There is a small discrepancy between the free one on M* and TRP, that while unimportant, I would like to reconcile. When using "Tracking" (Tracker on TRP), Snapshot, in the "% Change" column (Price Change % on TRP), it is 1% higher on the TRP version. What is crazy, is that all the other columns reconcile. Current Price, Price Change, Shares Held, Market Value, and Weight %. This recently happened and I am wondering if I did something with the way I entered Cash, although those columns reconcile too. Any idea what may be causing this?

Grandeur Peaks had late updates for Friday's closing fund prices. Fidelity, Vanguard, and Yahoo Finance still show Thursday closing price. Morningstar is the only source I've found with the correct price. I found Portfolio Manager to be accurate for my needs, and think it's performance has improved since Morningstar abandoned Discuss.
