For me anyway a single company holding vs. a fund. You can get and we do hold a few CEF’s in that yield range that make monthly distributions.

I've been corrected at MFO by YBB. That item is not a CEF. I must have mis-read the Kiplinger article in which it was mentioned. You own CEFs with that kind of yield, steelpony10, ? Please, do go on.... Thanks.

I stumbled across a CEF that might interest me, HQH. Anyone know this one? It yields about 8% and holds mostly pharmas and biotechs.

If you are trying to add to current income you may want to note that the disty is paid qrtly rather than monthly. They also seem to make minor changes to the disty frequently.

steelpony10, and uncleharley, Thanks for your comments. As steelpony10, knows, I have long avoided CEFs. To me, they feel too much like a "black box" and I don't feel like I know what is going on inside. So I am looking for a CEF that (1) will bring in some income, that (2) would be a reasonable "get my feet wet holding," I don't like leveraged funds.

Wow!! AWP looks like a timely gem. I wonder why they skip a month & then double up the next month on their disty?

Thanks, steelpony10, I notice that the Forbes article is from 2018. I'm thinking it might make sense for me to buy a bond fund, as my portfolio is 100% equities. Any recommendations for me to look at? This will be a fairly small holding in my portfolio, likely 2% or so.

A while back I posted my 7 Reasons Not To Own CEFs. I can't seem to find it. I wish PB had a "tags" feature (like M* had under the Khoros platform). Anyway, if you're interested I can try to remember and repost it.

Chang, just let me know where you put it and I'll read it.
I can't believe I mentioned bonds (above), as this is the absolutely worst time to buy bonds.
I may just stick with finding a stock to buy. I recently read that a third of the stocks in the NASDAQ are down 50% or more from their recent highs. It should be possible to find something that is a real bargain!

There should be opportunities available for stock-pickers: "Four out of every 10 stocks in the Nasdaq are currently down 50% or more from their 52-week highs. One out of every 5 stocks in the S&P 500 are down 20% or more from their highs of the last year. And this is at a time when the S&P 500 itself is less than 2% from all-time highs."Link

I'm looking for good stocks at bargain prices. They must have a yield of at least 3%. I'm open to suggestions.

If you are interested in dividends only and do not care about volatility, KMI deserves a look.

uncleharley, I do have KMI. Volatility doesn't bother me.
I just did a quick look at NEM, which I didn't know at all. I'm not so sure about buying a miner...

Miners are cyclical, but at this point in the cycle mho is they should do well in part because they represent value.

kathiel, Your: I stumbled across a CEF that might interest me, HQH. Anyone know this one? It yields about 8% and holds mostly pharmas and biotechs. -------- Currently not something to take a initial entry into. HQH and HQL traded at one time (many years back when lot of us owned them) over $40/sh. The current trading range is currently shown as 18-21 HQL and 19-24 HQH. My analysis data (sole opinion COB Friday) shows HQH as a 3star [reduce current shares being held) with a report card of 46 (power rating of only 56). Both HQH and HQL have been as low as "10" many years back.Sell code status is shown as "5" (at risk).... Live Long and Prosper....

xray, Thanks for you comments. I think I'm best advised to continue to invest in individual stocks that I choose. I hold a number of pharmas, and they are doing very well; while others point out that various funds focussed on health care have not done well.

I am watching the markett today. With stocks going down, I think I should be able to find a high quality dividend-paying stock at a very good price,
The Canadian Banks have gone up quite a bit, unfortunately. I think I'm too late on any of them.
I've looked more at the two stocks recommended to me, NEM and CCI. If anyone has a favorite stock that. is looking cheap, do let me know. I'm glad to research anything that looks good.

Especially like Newmont as I believe a “small” slice of gold/ PM may provide a valuable “hedge” in case of a market selloff. Gold over the long run has been a pretty poor investment, but NEM seems to be doing well as a company. They have a good P/E ratio, pay a good dividend, and reasonable debt levels, unlike many gold miners. I like it even better if it’s below ~56/ share! Also like CCI, it sees EVERYONE is on their cell phones constantly, a with CCII you are sort of “agnostic” to the cell phone carrier, they serve pretty much all of them. Better if you can pick it up below $165/ share. Good luck! Win

Based on recent trading patterns which are reflected in the S&P 500, one will probably be able to pick those stocks up at a favorable price when interest rates have reached a peak. That might be next week or next month or next year. I doubt that it will be tomorrow. This is a great time to build a dream watch list.

win...I see that photo of the buck and cringe. You see, in my top 100 things to do in life, one is: "Bag a buck deer." (67 done to date).
I have shot several does in Pennsylvania, including deer out-of-season to have venison at Penn State, but never got a buck. Was never available at hunting season.
My nephew just wrote a paperback book about deer hunting at Penna camps experience, titled SKATE by Stephen Meyer. Based on real life, it is actually, pretty good. Lost/overnight, my nephew almost froze to death. At camp,we would have 20 guys/20 deer, in two days. If I get a copy I will send it to you...or google it. A pretty quick read.
R48
Edit to add...from google: $10...SKATE...Skate is a classic coming-of-age story set among the hunting camps of the Pennsylvania backwoods in the late 1980s. Stef, a young man on a quest to get his first buck, meets a mysterious young woman named Skate on his journey. A thrilling adventure ensues, as Stef risks his life, determined to bring the buck in.
