My favorite curmudgeon investor, Charlie Munger, died today. He was Warren Buffett's closest friend and consigliere for many years. His influence on Berkshire Hathaway was tremendous.
I liked that Mr. Munger always spoke his mind - you knew exactly where he stood.

A real professional investor along with WB, doing the necessary deep research and holding well managed companies for the long haul.

Money aside, what I liked about the guy is he appeared to live fully alert and productive all the way to the last. Mental decrepitude and slow, debilitating disease are my two great fears -- maybe the only ones I have. I'm 75 and I live with my antenna way up & alert for "senior moments" and keep a log recording little episodes as they occur from time to time. They don't seem to be more frequent, but they DO occur. Recently I couldn't connect Dan Marino's name with his picture. Just the other day I forgot my PIN number for about five hours.
But old Charlie looks to have used and enjoyed every day the Lord gave him AFAIK -- evidently firing on all cylinders to his end.
If being #2 ever bothered him, he didn't ever let on. A lesser man or a bigger ego would have eventually tangled with Buffet. But Charlie seemed to always make do and succeed with the tools he had -- never drunk with envy. Not brilliant, but shrewd and practical.... without a neurotic bone in his body. I admire the guy.

The man who set up my pool table about 10 years ago was talking about a table he set up for a guy named "Charlie" at a big lake house near Detroit Lakes, MN. He couldn't remember his last name but kept saying what a nice guy he was even though he was obviously very well off financially. He then mentioned something about Buffett and I asked if his last name was Munger. He replied "Yeah, that's it"

"abominable no-man" Buffett's nickname for Munger. Apparently, Charlie was more conservative than Warren. I don't know BRK but I wonder how much of their success, at least more recently, has been due to their deal making in difficult situations. Convertible debt, preferreds, all kinds of deals at favorable terms for BRK.

Saw a "click bait" article on Yahoo Finance that quoted Warren as saying a luxury vacation for Charlie was a Bus Ride with air conditioning. I am frugal myself and at almost 70 I still cut and split 6 cords of wood per year. It's fun and good exercise.

Impressive man, always had very good “pithy” quotes. He will be missed by many, including me (as both a BRK.B holder and just interested investor)!
