Hello everybody! Glad to be here and I am still figuring out how to post on the thread without replying to it. Anyway,I migrated from Morningstar. Enjoyed discussions here and looking forward to continue here.
I am 65, have my own travel business. Learned some investing hard way in 2009 when market crashed. M*star and especially R48 (is he here?) wever great help.
I own my travel business but now there is no travel due to covid so I am trying to stay afloat while waiting for travel to reopen hopefully soon. Meanwhile I played with stocks trading and making some money. Also recently I found out about ARK ETFs and I am very studying them. Invested in ARKW with good results so far.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi!! Sophia

I don't think I ever shared this on M but my handle JavaJoe and avatar is because I have been an avid home coffee roaster since the late '90's. My avatar is the official Specialty Coffee Assoc of America flavor wheel, which captures the official lexicon of coffee cupping tasting and reviews.

Stats here. Been investing in individual dividend stocks since 2003. Portfolio has grown from 350k to a bit over a million. Been taking living expenses since retiring at 56th birthday in 2010.
My avatar Stats is short for my Internet name statsguy used since 1997. I am a retired full professor of mathematics, specializing in Statistics.
Diagnosed last July with metastatic pancreatic cancer. I was given 6 to 12 months to live. Currently about 17 months since diagnosis. In a clinical trial which has been decreasing tumor size. Would be lovely except according to my clinical trial doctor “ you have the worst side affects we have ever seen”. I go about 42 days between infusions though the clinical trial is set up for 21 days between infusions. Right now at day 14 and not enjoying it. Appetite should return next week, fatigue should start to improve, and my swelled face, legs, arms, and hands should begin to return to normal. Sorry I am whining
Love investing, but really only understand divided stocks. My wife, statsgal, can live off the dividends and never change anything. Our portfolio holding period averages about 13 years. So she shouldn’t need to worry about anything.
Worst investment Thornburg Mortgage. I was drawn in by the 12% yield. I received two dividends before it went bankrupt. Bedt investment. Bought Apple in 2004 to prove to the lovely statsgal that buying a stock because some guy on TV said we should. I’ve since taken profits twice and now are current investment is well over our original investment.
Enough rambling. Hope to be around awhile. Stats

You are not whining, just sharing. I seem to recognize your screen name from M*.
I have no clue on evaluating individual stocks. I understand terms, P/E etc. but have no idea how to use them to buy or sell. The way I read it one must have 20-25 stocks to be properly diversified. Is your wife involved in picking stocks?

Welcome stats (statsguy), from one mathematician to another! (12 + 144 + 20 + 3×√4)/7 + 5×11 = 92 + 0 "A dozen, a gross and a score, plus three times the square root of four, divided by seven, plus five times eleven, equals nine squared and not a bit more."

Statsgal is not a stock picker, but her understanding of investments is better than mine. All our stocks, down to 22, have been working on this for the past year. Our individual stocks are from large companies that have paid dividends for a long time. Even with the occasional problems I figure that she will never have to sell a stock. About half our portfolio is in TIAA Traditional and Vanguards Wellesley Income. Our, well her biggest challenge, is how to deal with RMDs pushing her into higher tax rate. stats

Thank you Chang for providing the link. It is really sad to see how what used to be a great forum succumbed for a variety of reasons. Most people blame the horrible new provider experience, but we also know that, during the last few years, it has not been the same as it used to be (I especially remember a great period...between 2006-2014). Anyhow, glad to be here. Hoping we can revive that old experience that taught me so much. A bit about me, I am 43 years old in my accumulation phase. I have followed what is probably a non-traditional path in my professional career. I am a Chemical Engineer that never really worked in that field. Completed my MBA at the young age of 25 (in retrospect it was not a good idea to do it so early) and ran a family business right after that. That business took so much from my personal life, as I found myself working every single day, no rest. I remember a period in which I worked 4 years straight with not a single day off. It wore me down. I decided at the time that owning a business was not what I really wanted, so we decided to sell as the financial crisis of 2008 was making things even worse. I then looked for employment and ended up in the retail industry. Today, I am a Functional Consultant for a software company that develops ERPs. Yeap, what I do has relatively nothing to do with anything I studied and prepared for, but I really love it I really enjoy investing and having good conversations around it. I even created a local meetup group some years ago and hosted discussions with stock investors in cafes that offered conference rooms. However, it was very difficult to stop certain people arriving at the meetings with the goal of "selling a service"...those were the disruptors in real life As mentioned, I am in my accumulation phase and maintain a 70% stock portfolio (20% bonds, and 10% "other - GLD, TMRSX, etc."). Mostly, I am a fund investor, but keep about 15% of my equity exposure in individual names. Again, looking forward to having a great place to share ideas and have smart and friendly conversations. Best, JC

I appreciate the invitation to join this group, Chang. The Morningstar boards have technical problems that make them unpleasant to use. I was just thinking a couple of weeks ago about how I miss the "old crew" from Morningstar. I'm glad to see some familiar names here. I enjoy talking about investing, sharing my approach and hearing from others about their approaches. I am 70, retired, and have invested my money to produce income. While I do take cap. gains from time to time, in general, I use the dividends produced by my stocks to augment my pension. My money is all in individual stocks; I stopped investing in mutual funds some years ago.

Welcome, kathiel, I remember you from the "Old M*" and I'm sure others do too, and are happy to see you here. M*'s move to Khoros actually seemed promising, although some IT problems persisted (search, staying logged in, etc.) but the move to Salesforce was an absolute disaster. Perhaps more importantly, the old "spirit" simply did not seem to survive all the migrations. That's what I am hoping to restore here, and getting old cadre members like yourself on board is really encouraging.

Chahta [@ gary1952] mention the change from Display name Gary1952 in your Profile, Status or Signature. Many may see the connection but others may not. How is Chahta pronounced? Unrelated, but in Indian Hindi, cha-h-ta means wish or desire.

I recently changed my screen name. Chahta (pronounced with both short 'A's and silent second 'H') is the Indian word for Choctaw. I have done a lot of ancestry work and was able to trace my ancestors back to an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. I became a citizen of the Nation 5 years ago. There are no financial perks but kind of cool to do it.
The reason I changed was because I had no anonymity on forums. I recently was trolled and my screen name was googled (I suspect) and used to find my last name. It was used in an intimidating instance. I am deleting my accounts elsewhere and will reestablish. I have used variations of my old screen name for 20 years on different forums. 2 other threads on Big Bang are apropos. 1) "How many of you are willing to disclose your real names" and 2) "Morningstar Boards".
I am not sure if this will do much good but it is a start.

My good friend and fellow Navy Nuclear Program employee, Chang, has been twisting my arm to join. Glad to do so. I took some time off from posting over XMAS. Have been posting on the Fidelity Forum (enrollment by invite). I will post my background here later. I think I recognize some poster names, but at soon-to-be age 76, memory is a fleeting thing.

I made this thread a "sticky" so it would stay up top. We've got 90 members now in only 34 days, but nowhere near as many "new member introductions". Too many shy people out there.

Hi Stats...really sorry to hear of your medical situation.
We had many good threads posting together...
I liked the rationale of your portfolio, suiting you and dividend needs. My library contains some of your posts.
Best wishes.

Good Morning....
Appreciate the invite to the board. Have been investing for more years than most of us want to talk about.... I use "analytical math" as my analysis tools in analysis for both buying and selling and basically hang out on the closed-end board since I have followed the profitable] CEF's for many years now.... I always use math type excel worksheets to tell me when to buy/sell securities in portfolio.... A sample of my abbreviated math analysis for a security is shown on the closed-end board....
Live Long and Prosper.... Eddie/xray

People who worked in the Naval Nuclear Power Submarine Program had super-secret clearances, and are used to remaining anonymous . Especially if they worked for an old codger Admiral named Hyman. Rickover! (Oh, that's me too) R48
