Don Everly and Tom T. Hall passed away last week. A friend just told me, I must have missed it (or maybe it didn't make the headlines). RIP.

Not to mention Charlie Watts, who left the planet today. The backbone of the Stones. I wasn’t a huge fan of the group but he was the quintessential rock drummer. Also a class act of of a person. 🙏🏼🥁

RIP Charlie Watts. The best.
I saw the Stones three times live. The first time in Munich in 1982, I thought I should see them before they quit.

Phil and Don Everly with 2 band mates in 1949 and about 1951 with Lefty Frizzell.
Unfortunately, never got to see them or Tom T.

Once a drumstick manufacturer offered Charlie to create a designer stick for him. Usually artists get a residual for such agreements. Charlie loved a previous stick made for famed jazz drummer, Joe Morello (my teacher). Charlie told the company to use Joe's stick with his name and give all the residuals to Joe. Class act of a guy and a great drummer for that group.

Rhythm: Not sure I've posted this pic. This is Joe with Paul Howard's roaring western swing band, circa 1947 or 48. Hank Garland on guitar at age 17; Joe maybe 20? Billy Bowman (ex Bob Wills) on steel. Garland later went on to record with the Everly Brothers among many others and replaced Scotty Moore with Elvis. I don't know enough about Morello to figure how he went from a western swing band to Brubeck. Maybe you do?

ignatz , yeah, I know about this recording. Morello was a young phenomenon and this was a high profile gig. Sometime soon after a young vibes player, Gary Burton joined the fold. Did you know Morello was a young violin virtuoso who played with the Boston Symphony before becoming a teenager, I think.

rhythmmethod , I've had Garland's LPs, CDs, and the stuff with Gary Burton for decades, but I had forgotten that Morello was involved on that "Jazz Winds" LP. Did not know any of Morello's violin background....there's something weird about young musicians....Buddy Emmons first instrument was also violin and he is reported to have said he didn't have much trouble with it, but fortunately gave it up for steel guitar in his early teens. Just found this pic; Grady Martin on bass with Hank in 1959. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall at that Nashville club.
