I'm a little surprised that VYM/ VTV made the list, but VIG didn't. Also, SCHB/ SCHX made the list, but not SCHD. Since she doesn't disclose what the screening criteria were, it's impossible to understand why a particular fund is on or not on the list. www.morningstar.com/articles/954302/the-best-equity-etfs |

In such articles, Susan D just lists Analysts' Gold rated funds. I have suggested to her that she broaden her articles to selectively include Gold and Silver rated funds and focus on what also looks interesting to her or M*. After all, Gold is a subjective M* rating and the "Best" according to it may not be universal.

Morningstar seems to have a love affair with Vanguard. I know it seems that way paul, but --a decade or so ago, M* was very much overly supportive of actively managed funds. After all, such funds are paying a lot of M* bills, via advertising, etc. M* has made good trendy progress in more balancing active vs passive now...and supporting etfs. --the subject is ETFs. Fido for instance doesn't have any. Vanguard made a good decision starting their own etf's way early. Despite Bogle being against them. --Vgd may have the lowest cost etfs ...but ishares gives them a good run. Most etfs now very low cost. --Vgd has some patents (yes, on fund management techniques) that other etfs do not have...a slight advantage to Vgd. These help keep both costs and taxes lower than others. --------------------------------------- If one is going for a broad-based index type ETF, I would suggest Vgd over others, all things considered. And if I had stated "didn't" for doesn't, then my context would have been clearer. Here's an interesting context also: During the 1970's I considered Fidelity was the innovative leader in stock mutual fund investing; Vanguard more for low cost bond funds. My retirement monies/portfolio split about 70/30%, with 70% at Fidelity. However, in the 1980s and on, to me, Vanguard was more innovative. I ended up in the last decade with the reverse, Vang'd having 70% of my portfolio; Fido only 30%. Various reasons why. Just an observation. R48 |
