Alternative Energy stocks are up over 100% for the year. Here's the price chart for ICLN: Although the ETF is up 137% YTD, it's been languishing in the cellar during five years. More to come?

I own Alternative Energy through ETF CNRG. Yep up something like 140% over the year. As usual, my position is too small. Otherwise I’d be shopping for a crib near Norbert ! Stay well everyone and Merry Christmas 🎄 YIKES Chart

Hi Karen, I have ICLN (iShares Global Clean Energy) and PBD (Invesco Global Clean Energy) ETFs in my portfolio. They are 8% of my portfolio. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the funds in your article. The narrative here seems fairly obvious. Governments worldwide have started throwing money at the sector. People like Elon Musk are fully behind it. I think this will be the big investment story of the 2020s. I'll start a new thread on the subject so we can explore the investment options in detail. Merry Christmas! N.

Norbert, please do. I've gotten energy investing wrong my entire life, and it looks like I have missed out on this new opportunity as well.

Norbert , please do. I've gotten energy investing wrong my entire life, and it looks like I have missed out on this new opportunity as well. I agree with Norbert that clean energy is a long term secular sector and should be on our radar for the foreseeable future. As with all investments, the timing of entry into this sector can be very important. Perhaps, this could be one of the topics covered in the new Clean Energy thread / forum. For example, One of the investments mentioned was ICLN. At 34 P/E and 50% of port in utilities, what is a reasonable P/E range for entry? Some of the price gain in 2020 is probably from depreciation of dollar, given 70% of the port is non-US.

Since I became an old, retired geezer, my interests have turned to the steady income that can be associated with utilities. I had not thought of clean energy as being seperate from utilities. I have found that UTG & UTF are steady eddy distribution vehicles. I have also been trying to gain a position in DFG but it keeps running away from me. Perhaps it is loaded with a couple of go-go clean energy companies. Just speculating. My charts do not disclose the underlying portfolios.

Welcome, akhalea ! It's great to see you again and on this site. I'm looking forward to reading and digesting your input. Feel free to drop an intro on the Off-Topic page; many people who do not know you from the "old M*" will be pleased to enjoy your contributions here. (Note: I replaced my name with "Chang" in your post because there are some strange people on the internet.)

akhaleaI'm happy to see your post. By coincidence, I was just talking about getting a starter telescope to do some amateur astronomy. We're living on Crete part of the year and think the sky will be suitable, as there's little light or other pollution.

Anil, It is great to hear from you again. Speaking of old & name changes, I have been thinking that changing my name to GrandpaHarley might be appropriate. The reason I came on this thread is that After checking some of the names in the portfolios of my favorite utility funds [UTF & UTG] I think I am getting enough clean energy exposure by staying with what I have. I am always looking for something that may work as a tactical trade so lets keep the thread going.

When you have time, may be you and Nobert can indulge the rest of us with your views on energy and clean energy. I have been out for the past two days and have another 42 hours of posts to catch up; may be you guys have already started a discussion on the topic. Look forward to reading (and hopefully learning from) your posts. A

More to come? Just want to mention how the Alternative Energy equity trend has reversed since my December 2020 post. I managed to post at the top. It's been downhill ever since. Lesson: beware "parabolic" (apologies to chang) price curves! Now looks like a reasonable entry point, though political enthusiasm for "Net Zero" has cooled.

Saw the OP and got thrown by it's old age - was thinking it was recent. Bubbles grow and pop. ICLN has been a dog.
Interesting bit in Bloomberg today about the financial industry that has been built around the IRA. Tax credit marketplace where small businesses have extra credits because they don't pay much tax anyway but the law allows them to sell any extra credits to larger companies, all facilitated/brokered by lawyers, etc. Insurance is sold to cover the possibility the clean energy projects don't generate the credits that have been forecast. After all of it, the credits end up priced at about 90 cents on the dollar.
