mnfish ,...I gave this up, because every time I shot at a fleeing grouse, I MISSED! 12 gage, side by side double barrel! R48 Edit to add: I noticed google said this about 12 gage shotgun: " It's also the #1 choice for home defense as well as for military and law enforcement use." Yes, I have seen some videos demonstrating the effects of a 12 gage, stating it is the recommended long rifle for home defense purposes.

mnfish ,...I gave this up, because every time I shot at a fleeing grouse, I MISSED! Speed is by far their greatest asset. That's why some grouse hunters count "flushes" as success. We always say if you want to "hunt" grouse you let them fly. If you want to "eat" grouse, you shoot them on the ground or in the tree if you get a chance.

Mom didn't know how easy that was...just that we had a small dinner to cook. R48

I play Bridge 5 times a week. Several of these players are in their 90s and are still excellent players, actually they are better than most players, and are fast too. I asked each of them to tell me about their longevity. The followings are their "secrets" 1) Exercise: Only one played tennis 2-3 times per week, the rest have done nothing special, just minor walking and gardening and not on a regular basis. 2) Food: nothing special, eat most stuff in moderation. They even eat bad stuff sometimes, such as fast food and sweets/cakes, I see them eating cakes every time we play. 3) Weight: skinny to average, one guy is 96 years old and over weight. 4) All were married to the same spouse for decades. 5) All have parents and sibling that live to their 80-90s. 6) All have been playing Bridge for decades. 7) All have been living in the same house for decades. It could be 2-3 houses/condo. 8) If they work outside the house it's mostly near = coming home every day = no travelling for work. 9) All have kids.
Basically: stable, predictable, balanced work/home environment with moderate pressure most times, and surrounding by family and friends.
Using your brain at older age is a plus. I never played any card games until I found Bridge about 10+ years ago. This game has strategy, thinking, be card smart, be bold at the right time, have a good partner, just an amazing game. I refuse to play any other game, especially the ones that depend on luck. BTW, slow players are usually below average, either you got it or not. Within a 10 mile radius there are 4 adult community center where you can play Bridge for $1-2 and enjoy a 3-4 hours with friends. Tuesday is the best day, we play at someone's house where each player bring their own dish, yummy food.

retiredat48, mnfish, FD1000,...BTW I do a daily stretching/exercise routine before getting out of bed...takes about 12 minutes. Things such as 50 leg lifts, aerobics on neck/head, arms/hands movements...head-to-toe. Not strenuous, but arthritis is worst upon awakening...helps. R48

Interesting info from the members of your bridge club. Two other things that would be good to know, but also might be too personal, are education level and level of earnings over their working years.

I work out hard for a geezer about an hour plus 3-4 times per week alternating between rowing, uphill treadmill work in addition to strength training and free weights each session. Yesterday I had to go into the big city for my 3 month supply of life supporting pills and eyedrops. I then treated myself to 2 loaded coney dogs washed down with a coke, skipping the fries.
Today the same workout rewarded with a donut and coffee and why I was at it a haircut. Tomorrow is a recovery day spent hauling garbage and recyclables to the appropriate locations followed by a trip to our library.
Because I believe genetics eventually will get me and I have no desire to live to 90 that’s a balanced lifestyle to me. Holding my weight at #220 (6’3”) that’s been a typical weekday routine most of my life. I think I’ll die somewhere from Friday night to Monday morning though when it’s time to throw caution to the wind…….😁

Most husbands have a BA or engineer degrees, several served in the military. Most women worked too, sometimes didn't worked for years raising kids. Most had a long term employment with the same company, many had a pension, both you don't see today.
